Unveiling Tonight’s Game Status of Travis Kelce: Will He Play or What’s in Store?

The countdown is on to kickoff.

When tonight’s game between the Lions and Chiefs gets underway, the question on everyone’s mind is: will star tight end Travis Kelce be playing? And if he is, how much of the game will he participate in?

On the flip side, if Kelce isn’t able to play, what impact will it have on the Kansas City offense?

Fortunately, Kelce’s knee ligaments are intact and he isn’t experiencing any pain. However, he does have a bone bruise and some lingering swelling. Ultimately, it will be up to him to decide whether or not he takes the field.

There’s a possibility that Kelce will dress for the game but see limited action or possibly not play at all. It’s worth noting that he has a $44,000 roster bonus tied to being on the game-day roster.

In deciding whether to play, Kelce may consider the fact that the Chiefs have extra time to prepare for their Week 2 game against Jacksonville.

If Kelce does sit out, what does that mean for the Chiefs? In the three games he has missed since becoming the starter in 2014, two were due to resting the team’s starters before the playoffs. Additionally, he missed a game against the Steelers in December 2021 due to COVID.

In that particular game, quarterback Patrick Mahomes targeted 10 different receivers, with nine of them catching passes. Notably, Mahomes did not attempt any rushing plays.

Therefore, it’s conceivable that the Chiefs will distribute the ball among multiple receivers, instructing Mahomes to remain patient and use his mobility to extend plays and find open targets.

While it’s undoubtedly a setback to not have Kelce operating at full capacity, the Chiefs still have the formidable presence of Mahomes, which is a significant asset for their offensive strategy.
