In Hong Kong on Friday, there were long queues at sushi restaurants, indicating that many people were not concerned about the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan. These individuals expressed their intention to continue visiting Japanese restaurants.

More than 20 customers were waiting outside a conveyor-belt sushi chain, Sushiro, in the Sheung Wan district. By 12 p.m., dozens of customers had already arrived, despite the wait time being an hour.

One person in the queue, 22-year-old Verita, said, “I don’t feel too concerned about radiation. Moderation is key in everything, right? Occasionally dining out for sushi shouldn’t pose a significant risk.”

Hong Kong recently implemented a ban on seafood imports from 10 Japanese regions as a precautionary measure. However, the city is still permitting food imports from 13 other Japanese regions, subject to strict tests and monitoring.

China, on the other hand, has suspended imports of all aquatic products from Japan.

While sashimi and seafood in Hong Kong supermarkets were clearly labeled with their places of origin, indicating that they mainly come from Argentina, Canada, and Norway, some customers, like Billy Tse, believe that Hong Kong people may already be consuming water with contamination from China’s own nuclear emissions. Tse said, “I personally wouldn’t worry about issues like eating raw seafood from Japan. Even if Japan discharges nuclear wastewater, I would still come here to dine.”
