London—Renowned actor Kevin Spacey appeared in his sexual assault trial in London on Thursday, vehemently refuting allegations made by four accusers. Spacey, facing a total of 12 charges including sexual assault and indecent assault, testified for the first time during the trial. Over a span of two decades, these charges arise from incidents that occurred in the U.K. Spacey maintains his plea of not guilty towards all charges.
During his testimony at London’s Southwark Crown Court, the Academy Award winner revealed that he had a consensual relationship with one of the accusers, which he described as “somewhat intimate.” Spacey admitted to being flirtatious with the man, leading to the development of their relationship over time.
“We enjoyed each other’s company,” the actor stated to the court, emphasizing that he would have taken the lead. Spacey acknowledged engaging in sexual activity with the man, but denied any forceful actions.
“It did not happen in a violent, aggressive, painful way… it was gentle and, in my mind, romantic,” Spacey clarified. “It was not what he [the accuser] has described.”
Previously, the accuser, who worked as a driver for Spacey during the early 2000s, portrayed the actor as a “slippery, snaky, difficult person” who had assaulted him multiple times. One incident allegedly occurred in 2005, as the driver transported Spacey to a party hosted by Elton John. Spacey refuted this accusation, presenting evidence of his filming schedule outside the U.K. during that time, including in Australia.
Spacey clarified that he and the accuser did not engage in any activities beyond sexual touching. He respected the boundaries set by the accuser, expressing his disappointment upon learning of the accusations.
Prosecutors concluded their presentation of evidence against Spacey on Wednesday. The U.K. jury listened to testimony from all four accusers in this case, with one of them referring to Spacey as a “vile sexual predator.” The testimony included a recorded police interview where the accuser, an aspiring actor, described his initial contact with Spacey as a request for mentorship in 2008. The accuser admitted to feeling extremely honored and starstruck by Spacey’s invitation, which eventually led to the alleged assault.
Spacey, upon initially hearing about the claims from the police in 2019, stated that he did not recall ever meeting the accuser. However, upon hearing the accuser’s testimony, Spacey’s memory was jogged, remembering a hurried encounter with the accuser leaving his apartment. The actor expressed concern and called the accuser to check on his well-being. Spacey admitted to engaging in consensual oral sex with the accuser but denied the specific assault described.
After the incident, Spacey sensed a change in the room when he emerged from the bathroom.
The trial, which commenced on June 28, was initially projected to last approximately four weeks.
