Tiffany Chen, Partner of Robert De Niro, Opens Up About Bell’s Palsy Diagnosis After Pregnancy: “My Facial Functions Were Completely Lost”

Tiffany Chen, the partner of the renowned actor Robert De Niro, recently opened up about her personal health struggle following the birth of their daughter, Gia Virginia Chen-De Niro, in April.

In an exclusive interview with “CBS Mornings,” Chen discussed her battle with Bell’s palsy, a temporary condition that affects the facial muscles and can cause drooping or paralysis on one or both sides of the face. Chen experienced the condition on both sides of her face, which is considered rare. Bell’s palsy is believed to be caused by inflammation and swelling of the facial nerve, although the exact cause is unknown. Some research suggests it may be associated with viral infections.

Bell’s palsy affects approximately 40,000 individuals in the United States each year, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. While the condition can affect people of any gender or age, it is most commonly seen in individuals between the ages of 15 and 45. Factors that may increase the risk of developing Bell’s palsy include pregnancy, preeclampsia, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and upper respiratory ailments.

Chen described the initial symptoms she experienced after returning home from giving birth. She noticed an unusual sensation in her tongue, which gradually progressed to tingling and numbness. Eventually, she began to feel that her face was “weird” and had an indescribable sensation.

Over the following days, Chen’s symptoms worsened to the point where her face began to collapse and deteriorate. She described it as feeling like her face was “melting on itself.” About a week after giving birth, the condition became unbearable, making it impossible for her to eat or drink.

Recognizing the severity of her condition, Chen contacted her doctor, who advised her to go to the hospital immediately. Upon arrival, she lost all facial function.

An upcoming interview with Tiffany Chen conducted by Gayle King will explore the impact of tabloid headlines on her facial expressions and the support she received from Robert De Niro throughout her health journey. This interview will be aired on “CBS Mornings” on Friday, July 14.
