TOKYO — Hong Kong has implemented stricter inspections on vegetable imports from Japan, extending the tightened controls to include seafood products. This decision was made in response to Tokyo’s plans to discharge treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea, as reported by Jiji news agency on Wednesday.
Hong Kong had previously announced that it would ban seafood products from several prefectures in Japan if Tokyo proceeded with the water release plan. The release is expected to begin this summer and has been supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
