MSNBC’s Jen Psaki strongly criticized the majority of Donald Trump’s Republican rivals for their apparent reluctance to speak out against the former president.
Psaki, a former press secretary in Joe Biden’s White House, noted that most serious contenders for the 2024 election have made the political calculation to stand by Trump in the primary. However, this strategy is not proving successful as candidates like former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) are still trailing behind frontrunner Trump in the polls.
Psaki acknowledged that criticism of Trump by former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson may not have significantly improved their chances, but at least they have avoided being remembered as enablers in the history books.
However, Psaki criticized the rest of the field for effectively enabling someone who led an attempted coup. She questioned their motives, asking if Nikki Haley wants to be vice president so badly, if Tim Scott hopes to become secretary of commerce, or what Ron DeSantis wants out of this, considering he just started his second term as governor. She also expressed confusion over Mike Pence’s intentions.
