Aug. 14 (UPI) — Javier Milei, a far-right opposition candidate and libertarian economist, secured an unexpected win in Argentina’s primary election for president. With over 30% of the vote, Milei surpassed nearly two dozen establishment candidates, defying initial polls that ranked his party in third place. This victory marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Argentina.

“Today, we have become the most-voted political force because we are the true opposition that seeks genuine change,” declared Milei during his victory speech at the LLA campaign headquarters in Buenos Aires. He emphasized the need for new faces, highlighting the failures of the same individuals who have been in power for decades. Milei’s triumph has been hailed as a “political earthquake” by media outlets with over 97% of the votes counted.

The primary election showcased 22 presidential candidates from various districts. Moving forward, Milei will face Patricia Bullrich, a centrist candidate representing Juntos por el Cambio, who secured 28% of the vote, and Sergio Massa, a member of the conservative ruling Unión por la Patria party, who garnered approximately 27%. Milei’s coalition plans to implement bold economic policies, including sweeping cuts to the federal budget and the abolition of the nation’s Central Bank, to combat the high inflation rate and stimulate change.

Addressing his supporters, Milei outlined his administration’s priorities, which involve reducing the size of government agencies, phasing out social welfare programs, and reversing progressive policies related to the environment and minority rights. He expressed confidence in his ability to secure a first-round victory, highlighting the passion, professionalism, and dedication of his team.

During a probe launched by federal prosecutor Ramiro González, Milei faced allegations of selling positions on the ballot for large sums of money. However, he vehemently denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the charges as a “smear campaign.” Meanwhile, Milei capitalized on widespread discontent over the country’s high inflation rate and the increasing poverty levels that affect one in four Argentines.

Bullrich vowed to join forces with Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, another candidate, to broaden her appeal in the upcoming vote. She promised to bring about change that combats corruption, promotes austerity, and ensures a brighter future for all Argentines. Massa urged citizens to seriously consider the path they want their country to take, emphasizing the importance of work, production, the defense of rights, and public education under any government.

As the presidential election in October approaches, both Bullrich and Massa will strive to gain momentum in the polls. The top two candidates will advance to a second round on November 19 if no candidate surpasses the 45% vote threshold.
