Iran Implements Stricter Rules on Wearing Hijab

Iranian authorities have recently announced a new initiative to enforce the wearing of the Islamic headscarf for women. Additionally, the morality police have returned to the streets after a hiatus following the death of a woman in their custody, which had led to widespread protests. Although the protests have subsided after a government crackdown, many women in Tehran and other cities continue to defy the official dress code.

In the past, the morality police were seldom seen patrolling the streets, and there were rumors of their disbandment. However, the police spokesperson, Gen. Saeed Montazerolmahdi, confirmed that the morality police will resume their duties of notifying and detaining women who do not adhere to the hijab requirement. In Tehran, both men and women from the morality police can be observed patrolling the streets in marked vans.

In a recent incident, police arrested Mohammed Sadeghi, a relatively unknown actor, in a raid on his home, which he had broadcasted on social media. The arrest was made due to Sadeghi’s video response to another video depicting a woman being detained by the morality police. Sadeghi’s comments expressing his anger could be seen as encouraging violence against the police.

It is important to note that Iran’s clerical rulers perceive the hijab as a significant symbol of the Islamic revolution that brought them to power, and they consider more casual attire as a sign of Western decadence.

By enforcing the dress code and maintaining the presence of the morality police, Iranian authorities aim to uphold the principles of the theocracy and control public display of Western influence. The situation in Iran remains tense and politically charged, with ongoing debates surrounding personal freedoms and the role of religious laws in society.
