Investigation Ongoing as Authorities Identify Victim in Wilmington Shooting

An individual who was tragically killed near the Wilmington Recreation Center has been identified as the police continue their investigation into the incident.

The shooting occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. on Thursday near Bay View Avenue and D Street, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Department.

The victim, identified as Jose Quezada, 46, from Carson, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.

According to the police, Quezada was leaving a Summer Night Lights event at the recreation center when he was fatally shot. The two suspects responsible, described as males wearing dark clothing, are currently being sought by authorities.

“Our victim, who served as a cook at the event, had just exited the center and was on the street when he was approached by unknown individuals who fired shots at him,” stated LAPD Capt. Keith Green in an interview with KTLA5. “He was hit by the gunfire.”

The motive behind the shooting remains unknown. The Summer Night Lights events aim to promote anti-gang violence and transform parks and recreation centers into safe spaces for families. These events operate in over 40 locations throughout Los Angeles.

In response to the tragedy, Los Angeles Councilmember Tim McOsker expressed his condolences. “Last night, a shooting occurred at the Wilmington Recreation Center following the conclusion of the Summer Night Lights Program, resulting in the loss of a member of our Wilmington community,” McOsker said in a statement. “The victim, a volunteer at the event, was assisting with barbecuing for the attending families. Summer Night Lights strives to foster trust and provide enjoyable, positive programs in communities affected by violence by creating safe public spaces. Acts of violence like this aim to undermine that sense of safety and community, but we refuse to let that happen. Please join me in praying for the victim and his family and friends.”

Mayor Bass also expressed her condolences and issued a statement regarding the tragic incident at Wilmington Park. “Last night, a committed member of the Wilmington community who had volunteered with Summer Night Lights to uplift his community was killed in a horrific act of violence. This community leader lost his life to the very violence he was tirelessly working to prevent. I grieve with his loved ones over this loss,” Bass said.

Bass described Quezada as an “active community volunteer, coach, father, and husband.” She further added, “This incident serves as a painful reminder that we must intensify our efforts to empower our communities with the necessary tools to combat such senseless violence.”
