Health officials support mRNA vaccines as AstraZeneca’s Covid vaccine sales decrease significantly

The sales of the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid vaccine have plummeted to zero as health officials shift their support to safer alternatives.

In the three months leading up to June, the Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical group recorded no sales for the vaccine, referred to as Vaxzevria, compared to $455 million (£350 million) in revenue during the same period last year.

Demand for the vaccine has steadily declined since the NHS began offering alternative mRNA jabs to individuals under the age of 40 due to rare cases of blood clots. The UK’s medicines regulator has stated that the risk of developing a blood clot from the AstraZeneca jab is one in 100,000 for those in their 40s, increasing to one in 60,000 for those in their 30s.

Earlier this year, numerous patients and families initiated legal action against the pharmaceutical company concerning the rare side effect.

Health officials have shifted their support to mRNA vaccines, such as those developed by Moderna and Pfizer, instead. Unlike vector vaccines like Vaxzevria, these vaccines use the mRNA molecule to stimulate an immune response, rather than using an actual virus or bacteria.

Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical group that manufactures a protein-based vaccine, has predicted €400 million in sales from its vaccine in the second half of the year, indicating strong demand for inoculation.

AstraZeneca initially did not generate profits from its vaccine, but began signing commercial contracts in late 2021 as the virus was brought under control. The company has previously stated that potential side effects from its vaccine are “extremely rare.”
