In Candid Interview, Rob Lowe Expresses Criticism Towards ‘West Wing’

Rob Lowe may not be anticipating an invitation to a “West Wing” reunion in his mailbox anytime soon. In a recent “Podcrushed” interview, the actor passionately criticized the acclaimed White House drama, which won 26 Emmys during its run from 1999 to 2006.

Lowe, who played deputy communications director Sam Seaborn for the show’s first four seasons, revealed that he had a negative experience on set and felt undervalued. This realization came to him when he considered how he wanted his children to handle toxic relationships in their lives. He didn’t want them to witness him enduring an abusive professional relationship, even if it was on a popular show.

“I walked away from the most popular girl at school, but I also knew that it was a super unhealthy relationship — and it was the best thing I ever did,” Lowe said, highlighting his decision to leave the show. It’s worth noting that this interview took place before the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Lowe also mentioned that “West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin departed shortly after his departure, resulting in a shift in the show’s creative direction. He described this new direction as resembling “ER” in the White House, which didn’t align with his interests.

In an article by Deadline, it was recalled that Lowe’s public statement at the time of his departure was more amicable. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to leave the show on good terms and acknowledged the impact of being part of television history.

While Lowe divulged some behind-the-scenes details in his memoir, he chose to withhold certain anecdotes to spare the embarrassment of those involved.

Rob Lowe, known for his roles in movies like “St. Elmo’s Fire” and his current TV show “9-1-1: Lone Star,” certainly didn’t hold back in his candid discussion about “West Wing.” It’s clear that his experience on the show left a lasting impression.
