House Majority Leader Steve Scalise has recently been diagnosed with an easily treatable form of blood cancer. He announced this news on Tuesday and has already begun treatment.
In a statement, Scalise revealed that he had some blood work done after feeling unwell for a few days. The results showed irregularities, leading to further tests and the diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, which is a highly treatable blood cancer.
Scalise expressed his determination to continue working while undergoing treatment over the next few months. He plans to return to Washington and fulfill his responsibilities as the Majority Leader, serving the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District.
Steve Scalise, age 57, holds the second-highest position among the House Republicans, after Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He is a prominent figure within the House GOP conference and has been considered both a potential successor and rival to McCarthy.
This is not the first time Scalise has faced health challenges and adversity. In 2017, he survived a shooting incident that occurred during an early-morning practice before a charity baseball game. The incident left him in critical condition.
Following his return to Capitol Hill after the shooting incident, Scalise remarked, “I am definitely a living example that miracles really do happen.”
Fellow lawmakers quickly expressed their sympathy and support upon hearing the news of Scalise’s diagnosis.
In a statement, McCarthy described Scalise as a faith-filled fighter who can overcome any obstacle. McCarthy spoke with Scalise and confirmed that he is in good spirits, emphasizing that neither a gunshot nor cancer will hinder him from achieving his goals.
House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik tweeted that there is no stronger fighter than Steve Scalise. She expressed her confidence in his ability to face and overcome this latest challenge with determination, as he has done before.
Stefanik added that she and others are proud to offer their support to Scalise and his family, as they face this challenge with strength and faith.
The White House reacted to the news by calling the diagnosis “devastating.” They expressed their heartfelt sympathy and wished Scalise a speedy recovery.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre conveyed her sadness about the news during the Tuesday press briefing. She also expressed hope for Scalise’s swift recovery, given the challenges he has already faced.
