Here’s What You Need to Know about the Status of Canadian Wildfires

The New York City skyline was enveloped in a thick haze, turning orange and causing some of the worst air quality levels in decades. This haze originated from a series of wildfires burning in Canada. Beginning in early June, these fires have impacted both Canadians and Americans, prompting evacuations and air quality warnings. The smoke traveled south, affecting cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. While the smoke gradually dissipated over the weekend on the U.S. East Coast, the fires in Canada are still ongoing. As of Monday, there are 450 active fires across the country, with the majority labeled “out of control.” Among these fires, 52 are burning in Ontario, with several covering large areas of land. Quebec reported at least 128 active fires. The harsh weather conditions in Canada, including drought and warm temperatures, are fueling the fires and making it difficult for firefighters to combat them. The Canadian government has issued a severe outlook for the country’s wildfire season, predicting continued higher-than-normal fire activity due to these conditions. The situation has prompted a national response, with Canada committing all of its national resources to fight the wildfires. International firefighters from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa have also been deployed to assist. President Joe Biden announced that American firefighters would also be heading to Canada to provide support. While air quality along the U.S. East Coast has improved, the lingering smoke has been attributed to a weather pattern that has directed the smoke from Quebec to the Northeast and other regions.
