Alleged Cheating Leads to Disqualification of Over 30 Cyclists in Giro d’Italia Race

The under-23 edition of the Giro d’Italia faced controversy as over 30 cyclists were disqualified for violating race rules. The Passo dello Stelvio segment, known for its challenging ascent, witnessed riders grabbing onto vehicles for assistance. Footage captured by fans prompted a race jury to disqualify 24 cyclists, and after further review, an additional seven riders were also removed from the competition. Wednesday’s stage, known as the “queen stage” and now branded as the Giro Next Gen, concluded with the tough climb up the Stelvio. Spectators watching from the sidelines filmed the riders breaking the rules, with some engaging in casual conversations and laughter while clinging onto team cars. Out of the disqualified cyclists, 24 were Italian, and seven were foreign, including Belgian cyclist Tijl De Decker, who emerged as the victor in this year’s Paris-Roubaix Under 23 race. The repercussions extended beyond the riders, as four team staff members and their cars were also excluded from the event. The President of the Italian Cycling Federation, Cordiano Dagnoni, expressed his disappointment, labeling the behavior witnessed as offensive and detrimental to the integrity of the sport. The federation may impose further penalties on the riders and teams, and the International Cycling Union could also take action. The ASD GC Sissio team was particularly affected, with four out of their five riders being ruled out. Similarly, Italian teams Ciclistica Rostese and Technipes each lost three members. Dagnoni, having observed the misconduct, withdrew his previous recommendation to RCS Sport, the race organizer, to invite more Italian teams in the future. He now leaves the decision to invite teams entirely in their hands.
