Helmet GoPro Captures Alaska Man’s Tragic Drowning, Body Remains Unfound

  • An Alaska man tragically recorded his own drowning in a glacial lake, according to police reports.
  • Authorities found a GoPro camera attached to a helmet, which captured the moment his kayak capsized.
  • Despite ongoing efforts, search teams have not yet located his body.

An Alaskan man unknowingly documented his tragic drowning in a glacial lake using a GoPro camera attached to his helmet. However, officials are still searching for his body, even though they have recovered the recording device, authorities announced on Tuesday.

The circumstances surrounding the death of Paul Rodriguez Jr. came to light on Monday when an individual turned in a helmet with a GoPro found on the shore of Mendenhall Lake, as reported by various sources.

Further investigation confirmed the helmet belonged to Rodriguez, who had been reported missing since July 11. Alaska State Troopers provided this information, as cited by the Associated Press.

According to police, Rodriguez’s roommate last saw him on July 10.

On July 11, the police discovered an abandoned kayak, similar to the one displayed in Rodriguez’s social media post earlier that day, floating on the lake. A search and rescue operation, involving inspections of the lake and shoreline, as well as an aerial search using a helicopter, was initiated. However, authorities have yet to find Rodriguez’s body, according to a dispatch from the Alaska State Troopers.

The GoPro footage is chilling, as it captured the moment when the kayak overturned, leading to Rodriguez’s drowning in the glacial water, as per the dispatch. “The recording continued showing that the kayak overturned due to a strong current coming from the glacier,” said Tim DeSpain, a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers, in an email to the Associated Press.

It was determined that Rodriguez was not wearing any protective gear, such as a buoyancy aid or appropriate clothing for glacial water activities, according to the dispatch by the Alaskan police. The search for his body in Mendenhall Lake is ongoing.

In an interview with AP, Rodriguez’s son, Jaden Rodriguez, described his father as someone who loved the outdoors, had a passion for photography, and was an overall good person.
