Experiencing the miracle of motherhood at 70 years old is a rare and incredible event. Safina Namukwaya, a woman from Uganda, expressed her overwhelming joy at the birth of her twins. The babies were delivered on Wednesday at a medical facility in Kampala, following a successful fertility treatment.
Dr. Edward Tamale Sali, a renowned fertility specialist at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre, explained that the twins were conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) using a donor egg and the biological father’s sperm. Named the achievement “extraordinary,” given the mother’s age.
Safina’s twins arrived prematurely at 31 weeks and were immediately placed in incubators for proper care and monitoring, as reported by the BBC.
The historic event was celebrated by the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre on their Facebook page. A video interview with the mother and her doctor was shared, emphasizing the remarkable nature of the birth, as well as the good health of the mother and her twin babies – a boy and a girl.
“There is no way to express my joy at this moment,” said Namukwaya, who resides approximately 75 miles west of Kampala in the rural area of Masaka.
Namukwaya also shared her previous experiences, from giving birth to a girl in 2020, despite facing criticism and disbelief due to her age, to the challenges she faced after the loss of her first husband in 1992. She revealed that her older partner has not visited her since the delivery, expressing concerns about his reaction to her giving birth to twins.
In 2019, the birth of twins was also reported from a 73-year-old Indian woman who underwent IVF treatment, adding another awe-inspiring tale to the remarkable instances of conception and birth.
