It’s not officially Christmastime until… Cher graces the dance floor.
The iconic diva delivered a spectacular performance of “DJ Play a Christmas Song” from her latest Christmas album during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday (Nov. 23). She transformed the parade route into a lively dance club, taking the spotlight on a silver stage surrounded by dancers dressed as disco-inspired toy soldiers.
A group of dancers in silver attire also encircled the stage, presenting giant red hearts for the grand finale.
The upbeat Christmas track echoes one of Cher’s greatest hits, 1998’s “Believe,” with its vocoder-enhanced vocals and infectious beat. “DJ Play a Christmas Song” made its debut at No. 3 on Billboard‘s Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart last month — marking Cher’s highest-charting song on the chart. Furthermore, its parent album, Christmas, soared to the top of Billboard‘s Top Holiday Albums earlier this month.
In a recent interview conducted by Billboard about the new album, Cher expressed, “They’re not your typical ‘Christmas Christmas’ songs, OK? They’re just incredible songs. I don’t usually say that because I’m extremely particular, but I genuinely love the songs, and so does everyone who hears them.”
One of the biggest admirers of Cher’s parade performance was Flavor Flav. The Public Enemy rapper appeared on screen extensively applauding from the crowd when the song concluded.
Social media is also raving about it — with one fan on Twitter humorously pondering, “Is Cher singing ‘DJ Play a Christmas Song’ or did someone spike my coffee with absinthe?”
