Gallup Finds Adult Cigarette Smoking Remains Close to Historic Low

A recent Gallup survey reveals that the smoking rate among American adults remains close to a historic low achieved last year. According to the Gallup Consumption Habits survey, only 12 percent of Americans reported smoking cigarettes in the past week.

While this figure represents a 1 percentage point increase from the previous year, it is still significantly lower than all other years in the eight decades that Gallup has tracked this data.

Gallup’s analysis of the survey results suggests that the decrease in smoking can be attributed to increased awareness of the health risks associated with smoking and the implementation of smoking bans in public places.

The survey also examined participants’ use of electronic cigarettes or vaping in the previous week. The results showed that 8 percent of adults reported using e-cigarettes during that period, which aligns with previous Gallup surveys conducted since 2019.

Interestingly, the analysis highlights that young adults are the largest group of e-cigarette users, with those under 30 years old more than twice as likely to smoke e-cigarettes compared to other age groups.

The survey was conducted from July 3 to 27.
