Russia conducted drone strikes in Ukraine’s Odessa region, targeting warehouses and granaries at a grain-handling port on the Danube River. No casualties were reported, according to the regional government. The attacks were carried out overnight on Tuesday using combat drones. The Ukrainian Air Force and Defense Forces successfully shot down 11 of the drones. These strikes by Russia are seen as an escalation in their efforts to disrupt global food supplies and prevent grain from reaching those in need. In response, the United States criticized Russia’s actions, stating that they disregard global food security. Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure have not only destroyed large quantities of grain but have also resulted in the loss of a significant portion of Ukraine’s arable land. Meanwhile, a vessel departed from Ukraine using a new transport corridor established to evacuate commercial ships stranded due to the war. This corridor will primarily be used to evacuate ships that were in the ports during Russia’s invasion. However, the Ukrainian navy warned of the ongoing military threat from Russia even after their withdrawal from the U.N.-brokered grain initiative. Since then, Russia has continued to target Ukraine’s ports and grain handling facilities, causing further damage to their grain export infrastructure.
