As the 19th Asian Games concluded, the Philippines made a lasting impact in Hangzhou, China. This city, known for its electric cars and advanced artificial intelligence, witnessed the triumphant return of the gold medal in men’s basketball to Philippine shores. Gilas Pilipinas, against all odds, won the finals against Jordan in a swashbuckling manner, making the victory, as described, “worth a thousand golds.”

While the Philippines’ triumph in basketball rightfully restored their dominance in Asian hoops after 61 years, it didn’t receive as much attention as their victory over host China in the semifinals. Nevertheless, back home, basketball-crazed Filipinos celebrated the country’s supremacy in the sport.

However, it’s important not to overlook other exceptional athletes who shone brightly in the Asian Games. EJ Obiena, the world’s second-best pole vaulter and Asia’s finest, quenched the nation’s thirst for a gold medal. Additionally, jiujitsu grapplers Meggie Ochoa and Annie Ramirez showcased their prowess by emerging victorious in their respective weight divisions.

Boxer Eumir Marcial, even though he didn’t win gold due to what many believe was a biased hometown decision, still achieved his main objective of securing a spot in the upcoming Paris Olympics. Marcial’s silver finish, along with Arnel Mandal’s second-place performance in the sanda warrior category, raised concerns.

Despite this, the Philippines left its mark with a total of four gold, two silver, and 12 bronze medals before the closing ceremonies. Although they fell short of replicating their medal haul in the previous Asian Games, the atmosphere became more vibrant with the basketball gold.

“We simply showed the entire continent that we are once again number one in the sport the country loves most,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Bambol Tolentino. “This victory is worth a thousand golds.”
