Family Finally Reunites with Paul Whelan After 3 Years

Russian state-controlled media released a new video on Monday featuring Paul Whelan, the former US Marine who is currently imprisoned in Russia on unfounded spying charges. The video provides a glimpse into Whelan’s daily life in a penal colony. Dressed in a black prison uniform, Whelan is shown eating in a cafeteria with other inmates, operating a sewing machine, and displaying what appears to be his prison ID. Despite the encouragement of a Russia Today (RT) reporter, Whelan refuses to answer any questions and states that he cannot do an interview. According to CNN, Whelan’s brother David revealed that the RT crew filmed Whelan in May, and as a result, the prison staff retaliated against him when he declined to give an interview.

David Whelan expressed that this video is the first time he has seen his brother’s appearance since June 2020. While the circumstances are unfortunate, he is relieved to see that Paul’s spirit remains unbroken. Paul Whelan, the former director of global security for US automotive parts supplier BorgWarner, has been imprisoned since December 2018. He claims to have traveled to Moscow for a wedding but Russia accuses him of being involved in intelligence operations, a claim that both Whelan and the US government vehemently deny. Whelan was convicted of espionage in 2020 and received a 16-year sentence in a penal colony in Mordovia. Despite ongoing efforts by US officials, his release has not yet been secured.
