Express Train Derailment in Pakistan Claims 30 Lives

Ten cars of a passenger train derailed in southern Pakistan on Sunday, resulting in the tragic death of 30 individuals and leaving over 90 others injured. The incident took place near the town of Nawabshah, causing some of the derailed cars on the Hazara Express train to overturn. It was reported by senior railway officer Mahmoodur Rehman Lakho that the train, en route from Karachi to Rawalpindi, lost its tracks near Sarhari railway station, as mentioned by the AP. The derailed cars were scattered across the flat, rural landscape, causing severe damage and posing a great risk to the passengers on board. Rescue teams were seen in action, rescuing women, children, and elderly passengers from the damaged cars. In the midst of the chaos, injured individuals cried for help while locals provided water and food to alleviate their distress.

Upon arrival at the scene, senior police officer Abid Baloch confirmed that the rescue operation had been successfully completed by early evening. Dozens of injured individuals were safely brought to a secure area, and the final overturned car was cleared. During a political gathering in Punjab, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed his grief over the loss of life and offered prayers for the departed souls and the speedy recovery of those injured. “We all pray, may Allah grant a place in heaven to those who passed away and I wish quick recovery for the injured,” he solemnly stated.

Ihtesham Ali, who tragically lost several family members, frantically searched for them amidst the chaotic situation. “Seven members of my family and 22 from my neighborhood are missing, and so far, we have only found four of them. The rest are still missing,” he tearfully shared. Minister for Railways, Khwaja Saad Rafiq, confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway. Pakistan often experiences train crashes due to the poor maintenance of railway tracks, outdated communication and signal systems, and inadequate safety standards rooted in colonial-era practices.
