Exploring the Possibility: Space Force Evaluates Establishing a Base in a New Country

The US Space Force commander reveals that the military branch is ramping up its activities in Asia and considering the establishment of a hotline with China. Gen. Chance Saltzman states that the Space Force has explored the idea of “opening up a line of communication to make sure that if there is a crisis, we know who we can contact,” although discussions with China have not taken place yet, as reported by Reuters. Saltzman also reveals that the Space Force is contemplating the creation of a base in Japan. South Korea became home to the force’s first overseas base last year.

According to Stars and Stripes, Saltzman discloses that Space Force guardians are already collaborating with Army personnel at Misawa Air Base in northeast Japan in a missile-tracking unit, and the unit will soon become part of the Space Force command. Saltzman emphasizes the importance of collaboration with Japan and like-minded nations to foster responsible behavior and deter conflict in the space domain, as cited by Kyodo News.
