Breaking News: Writers’ Strike Resolution Promises Show Revivals in Days

With a tentative deal reached between major entertainment studios and Hollywood writers for a new labor contract, the return of some television shows to air is expected in the coming days.

According to the Associated Press, daytime and late-night TV talk shows like NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” are likely to be among the first to resume production.

Variety reported that most late-night show producers are looking to return to work on either October 2 or October 9, with some hoping to come back as early as this week. Deadline also reported that staff members working on daytime talk shows are anticipated to return to work during the second week of October.

However, scripted shows such as Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and ABC’s “Abbot Elementary” are expected to take longer to return due to the ongoing strike by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), representing 65,000 Hollywood actors.

The strike by Hollywood writers, which began on May 2 and marked the first such action since 2007 for the WGA, lasted approximately four-and-a-half months. It became the second-longest work stoppage in WGA history, after the 1988 strike that lasted 154 days.

The negotiations involved prominent studio chiefs such as Disney CEO Bob Iger and Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing studios like Disney, Netflix, and Paramount, have yet to resume talks, which could lead to further delays for their programs. (It’s worth noting that Paramount Pictures and CBS News are part of Paramount Global, with some CBS News staff being SAG-AFTRA or Writers Guild members, but their contracts are unaffected by the strikes.)

Writers Guild Deal

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the AMPTP reached a tentative agreement on Sunday. However, official return to work for Hollywood writers will only happen after the Guild approves the new contract, as stated by the union to its members on Sunday. Details of the new deal have not been disclosed yet, with the WGA tweeting that “more details coming after contract language is finalized.” The pact still needs to be approved by the WGA’s council and undergo a vote by its full membership. Neither the guild nor the AMPTP have responded to requests for comment as of Monday.

In contrast, contract negotiations between the studios and SAG-AFTRA have not resumed since the actors union began their strike in July. The union remains dedicated to achieving fair terms for its members and urges the studio and streamer CEOs and the AMPTP to return to the table to make a deal.

When Will “Severance” or “Stranger Things” Return?

Writers rooms for scripted shows like Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” Apple TV+’s “Severance,” and ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” are expected to resume quickly. However, due to the absence of performers to act out the scripts, significant delays between the creation and production of these shows are inevitable.

Film writers will also return to work according to their own timeline, with those working on scripts or late revisions for already scheduled movies like “Deadpool 3” and “Superman: Legacy” likely working hard to avoid further release-date delays.

When Will “The Drew Barrymore Show” Return?

Drew Barrymore’s return to her daytime television show became a rallying point for picketers, leading her to cancel her plans. “The Talk” and “The Jennifer Hudson Show” also called off their return plans. The plans for the return of Barrymore and the other shows have not been announced yet. However, the WGA has made it clear that guild members cannot resume work on projects until the tentative contract is ratified.

One show that might make a speedy return is “Real Time with Bill Maher.” The host initially planned to return without writers but postponed after last week’s negotiations were set.
