While a 2020 study suggested that depression and anxiety can increase the risk of a cancer diagnosis by 13%, an analysis published in August by Cancer found no links between depression or anxiety and common forms of the disease like breast, prostate, colorectal, or alcohol-related cancers. Psychiatrist Dr. Jesse Fann from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center states that individuals with physical health conditions often have higher rates of anxiety and depression. However, there is also evidence that suggests anxiety and depression can increase the risk of physical health conditions. Dr. Ganz emphasizes the importance of adopting healthy behaviors, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, stress reduction, and adequate sleep. For individuals with depression and anxiety, who may experience a lack of motivation to engage in such activities, support from friends and family is crucial. These support networks can also help individuals with mental health disorders stay on top of routine cancer screenings and other healthcare appointments. Dr. Ganz also highlights the significance of controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels in order to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Older adults who feel they have sufficient support from family, friends, and neighbors tend to have better overall health and are more likely to take steps to maintain it, according to a study published in the Journal of Gerontology. Collaborating with healthcare providers plays a vital role in managing physical and mental health conditions effectively. Communication regarding personal and family health history is essential in determining the most effective and safe treatment methods.
