Expanded Armored Vehicle Supply from Australia to Ukraine

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday that the Australian government is providing a new A$110 million ($73.5 million) package to Ukraine to support their defense against Russia’s invasion. This new package includes 70 military vehicles. With this additional funding, Australia’s total contribution to Ukraine reaches A$790 million, with A$610 million specifically allocated for military support since the conflict began in February 2022.

During a media briefing in Canberra, Albanese emphasized the importance of this support, stating that it will make a significant difference for the Ukrainian people who are displaying great courage in the face of Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war. Notably, Albanese clarified that the package was not directly prompted by recent events in Russia, such as the temporary occupation of the city of Rostov by heavily-armed Russian mercenaries.

Australia has been a substantial contributor to the West’s support for Ukraine and has been supplying aid, ammunition, and defense equipment, including numerous Bushmaster armored vehicles. The Australian government has also imposed sanctions on about 1,000 Russian individuals and entities and banned the export of alumina and aluminum ores to Russia.

In addition to the military support, Australia plans to extend duty-free access for goods imported from Ukraine for another 12 months to boost Ukraine’s economy and trade.

The latest military assistance package from Australia includes 28 M113 armored vehicles, 14 special operations vehicles, 28 medium trucks, and 14 trailers.

Albanese also expressed satisfaction with the Australian high court’s decision to dismiss Russia’s challenge against the federal government’s control of land leased for a new embassy in Canberra. He expects the Russian Federation to respect the court’s ruling. Russia’s lease for the new embassy was cancelled by Australia on June 15 due to national security concerns.

In conclusion, Australia’s ongoing support for Ukraine highlights its commitment to providing assistance and solidarity in the face of Russia’s aggression. The financial and military aid, along with diplomatic measures, send a strong message of support to Ukraine and condemnation of Russia’s actions.
