June 27 (UPI) — In its continuous effort to address human rights abuses against anti-regime protesters, the European Union has blacklisted seven Iranian officials.

Since September, Iran’s spiritual leader, Ali Khamenei, has responded to the protests with a violent crackdown, resulting in hundreds of deaths, including court-ordered executions.

The European Union has sanctioned various individuals responsible for the trials and execution of Saleh Mirhashmi, Majid Kazemi, and Saeid Yaqoubi, who were involved in the protests.

Among those sanctioned are Seyyed Mohammad Mousvian, the public and revolutionary prosecutor of Isfahan province, and Ali Zare Nouri, the deputy judge and advisor to the provincial criminal court of Isfahan.

Seyyed Nader Safavi Mirmahalleh, the governor of Gilan province and head of the security council for the city of Rezvanshahr, has been sanctioned for ordering officers to open fire on protesters, resulting in multiple deaths, including children.

Other individuals facing sanctions include Seyyed Khalil Safavi, the police commander for Rezvanshahr, for following Mirmahalleh’s orders, and Seyyed Abbas Hosseini, the governor of Amol, for the government’s killing of two protesters in September.

Mojtaba Fada, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander in Isfahan, and Rashid Kaboudvandi, the commander of the Imam Hossein Guards Corps of Karaj, have also been sanctioned.

In a statement, the European Union and its member states called on Iranian authorities to stop the violent crackdown, release those unjustly detained, and cease the use of arbitrary detentions to silence critical voices.

This latest package of sanctions marks the ninth time the European Union has taken action against human rights violations in Iran, with a total of 223 individuals and 37 entities subject to asset freezes and travel bans. The sanctions also prohibit others from providing funds or economic resources to the sanctioned individuals.

The sanctions come as protests, sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September, continue into their tenth month.
