The movie, released on Friday, follows Lawrence’s character, a 32-year-old bartender, who is hired by overbearing parents to date their 19-year-old son (played by Andrew Barth Feldman) before he goes to college. British Vogue and Bust have reported on the backlash regarding Lawrence’s character seducing Feldman’s despite their 13-year age difference on screen.
Director Gene Stupnitsky, who co-wrote the screenplay, addressed concerns about the film’s content, assuring audiences that they took great care to avoid any discomfort. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stupnitsky stated, “If you feel that way when you come out of the movie, I would be surprised. We took a humanist approach, and I think that’s all you can ask for.”
Feldman, in an interview with Vanity Fair, acknowledged the inevitable backlash but defended the film’s intention to make viewers uncomfortable. He emphasized that his character is an adult in the movie and described “No Hard Feelings” as a “cringe comedy.”
Actors Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick, who portray the overbearing parents, also expressed their support for the film’s premise. Benanti identified the movie as a cautionary tale about parents overly influencing their children’s lives, while Broderick stood by the creative choices made by the director and cast. Additionally, Natalie Morales, another cast member, pointed out the double standards present in the industry, highlighting the prevalence of older male stars paired with younger female leads without much scrutiny.
