Elon Musk’s Potential Surgery Could Potentially Postpone Showdown with Zuckerberg

Elon Musk has indicated that he may undergo surgery prior to his proposed “cage match” with Mark Zuckerberg.

The two tech billionaires seemed to have agreed to a face-to-face showdown in late June. While it remains uncertain if an actual physical fight will take place, Musk and Zuckerberg have been keeping the interest alive by taking jabs at each other online. Most recently, Musk announced that the fight would be live-streamed on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Musk also stated that the proceeds from the fight would be donated to a charity for veterans. In response, Zuckerberg, on his Threads social media account, questioned the choice of platform, suggesting the use of a more reliable platform that can effectively raise funds for charity. In a subsequent post, the CEO of Meta, Facebook’s parent company, expressed skepticism about the fight actually happening.

Zuckerberg wrote, “I’m ready today. I initially suggested Aug 26 when he first challenged me, but he hasn’t confirmed.” It’s worth noting that Zuckerberg has training in mixed martial arts and recently participated in his first jiu-jitsu tournament earlier this year. He emphasized his love for the sport and his commitment to continue competing with fellow practitioners, regardless of the outcome of the proposed showdown.

On Sunday, Musk mentioned that he was training for the fight by weightlifting. However, he later addressed the uncertainty surrounding the fight’s timing, as he has a scheduled MRI and the potential need for surgery.

“I’m getting an MRI of my neck & upper back tomorrow,” Musk wrote on Sunday night. “The fight may require surgery before it can happen. I will have more information this week.”

The talk of an in-person fight originated in June when Musk, the owner of X, responded to a tweet about Meta’s plan to release a new Twitter competitor called Threads. Musk made a comment about the world becoming exclusively under Zuckerberg’s control with no other options, leading to a Twitter user jokingly mentioning Zuckerberg’s jiu-jitsu training.

Musk replied, saying, “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol.” After Zuckerberg appeared to accept the challenge, Musk suggested holding the fight in the Vegas Octagon.

Whether Musk and Zuckerberg actually make it to the Las Vegas ring remains to be seen, especially considering Musk’s tendency to tweet about actions prematurely or without follow-through. However, even if their cage match agreement is all in jest, the banter has generated significant attention, leading to a wave of memes and posts encouraging people to “choose your fighter.”

The Associated Press reached out to Meta, X, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which owns the Octagon, for statements on Monday morning.
