Eight Individuals Successfully Rescued from Precarious Dangling Cable Car

In a remote area of Pakistan, a daring rescue operation was carried out to save six children and two adults from a cable car that was hanging over a river canyon for over 12 hours. Military commandos, along with civilians, used helicopters and a makeshift chairlift to safely retrieve the group from a height of more than 900 feet above the river in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Despite the challenges posed by darkness and high winds, the rescue team successfully brought everyone to safety. The Guardian reports that two children were initially rescued by helicopter before the change in weather conditions. Zipline experts were called in to assist in using a cable as a zipline to bring the remaining children and adults to safety.

The children, aged between 11 and 15, were on their way to school when one of the cables snapped, causing the cable car to become suspended in a precarious position. This dramatic rescue effort captivated the entire country, as people across Pakistan gathered around television sets to watch the coverage. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar expressed relief and acknowledged the exceptional teamwork displayed by the military, rescue departments, district administration, and local residents in successfully rescuing all the children.

When the children were reunited with their families, emotions ran high, with many of them bursting into tears. Nazir Ahmed, a local police officer, described the moment as one that everyone had been praying for. Cable cars, often built illegally and in makeshift fashion, are a commonly used mode of transport in parts of Pakistan where there is limited infrastructure and people need to navigate rugged terrain. Some cable cars are constructed using the upper body of pickup trucks as cabins and are even used to transport cattle and cars. In response to this incident, Kakar has ordered safety inspections of cable cars and chairlifts across the country.
