Exactly one year ago today, on August 28, 2022, a tragic incident unfolded in Downey. A young girl from Downey lost her life due to a fatal overdose of counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl. The man responsible for selling her these pills, Jonathan Limas-Reyes, has been taken into federal custody by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Limas-Reyes, a 26-year-old resident of Downey, was apprehended on Tuesday afternoon following an investigation by federal officials. He now faces charges brought against him by a federal grand jury on August 19. The indictment includes two counts, accusing Limas-Reyes of distributing fentanyl resulting in death and distributing fentanyl to a person under the age of 21.
During his arraignment on Wednesday in U.S. District Court, Limas-Reyes pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been ordered to be detained until his trial on October 18.
The indictment alleges that on or around October 29, 2021, Limas-Reyes sold the victim fentanyl-laced pills, which ultimately caused the death and serious bodily injury of the victim, identified as A.K.
It is important to note that the charge of distribution of fentanyl resulting in death and serious bodily injury carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in federal prison and a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has stated that the DEA’s Los Angeles Field Division is leading the investigation, with considerable assistance from the Downey Police Department.
