NBA Players Fuming Over Noah Lyles’ Comments on Being ‘World Champion’

The recent remarks made by U.S. track and field star Noah Lyles regarding NBA players calling themselves “world champions” after winning an NBA title were met with amusement within the basketball community. Lyles, 26, expressed his disapproval during a press conference at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, stating, “You know what bothers me the most? When I watch the NBA Finals and see ‘world champion’ on their heads. World champion of what? The United States? Don’t get me wrong, I love the U.S., but that’s not the whole world… there are no flags in the NBA.”

Notable NBA players such as Kevin Durant and Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns, as well as Aaron Gordon of the Denver Nuggets, responded to Lyles’ comments on social media. Durant simply wrote, “Somebody help this brother,” while Booker added a facepalm emoji. On the other hand, Gordon challenged the six-time world champion sprinter to a race, stating, “Whatever… I’d smoke you in the 200m.” Lyles, who secured three gold medals, including a double in the 200-meter sprint, at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, has yet to respond.

Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat joined the conversation, humorously asking, “Lol, is somebody going to tell him??” Adebayo was part of the 2020 Olympic team that won gold, alongside Durant, Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Draymond Green, a four-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors. Lillard also chimed in, expressing his amusement with a few crying laughing emojis and saying, “Tf, last time I checked, the NBA has the best competition in the WORLD,” while former Utah Jazz player Juan Toscano-Anderson confirmed the sentiment, writing, “The NBA has the best competition in the world.”

Free agent guard Austin Rivers, a former first-round pick, found Lyles’ comments and delivery cringeworthy. He summarized his reaction by stating, “Simply put, the best players in the world play in the league. Winning an NBA championship qualifies as world champs. I don’t know what’s more cringe, his comment or his voice and delivery.”
