Moderna announced on Wednesday that its COVID-19 vaccine has been updated and is now effective against emerging virus variants, including the Pirola variant.
One of these emerging variants, known as Kraken, has become more prevalent this year. Both the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are closely monitoring the Pirola variant, which has over 30 mutations. According to the CDC, the Pirola variant is notable for its multiple genetic differences from previous versions of the virus and its potential to cause reinfection in individuals who have previously had COVID-19 or received COVID-19 vaccines.
The Food and Drug Administration may approve new vaccines as early as Friday, as reported by NBC News.
Moderna conducted a clinical trial which showed that the booster shot provides a significant increase in protection against variants BA.2.86 (Pirola), EG.5 (Eris), and FL.1.5.1 (Fornax) for vaccinated individuals. The results of the trial demonstrate that the updated COVID-19 vaccine generates a strong immune response against the highly mutated Pirola variant, confirming its importance in protecting against variants as we enter the fall vaccination season.
In addition to the XBB.1.5 strain, the updated Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax vaccines are also effective against other variants such as Pirola.
