Dan Murray-Serter Reflects on His Seventh Burning Man Festival Amid Intense Weather

In this piece, Murray-Serter shares his unique experience at Burning Man 2023 in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, where unexpected heavy rains and flooding occurred.
The Burning Man Experience
Being a “burner” means attending Burning Man regularly, just like how I frequently visit my favorite cities around the world, like LA, Berlin, and Amsterdam. Black Rock City, where the festival is held, is no different, except it’s a temporary city built for two weeks each year. My camp, Serendipitea, consisted of around 70 people who were carefully chosen based on their willingness to contribute through various tasks like kitchen shifts, cleaning shifts, and bar shifts. The sense of contribution is one of the things I love most about Burning Man.
When the rain hit, Burning Man proved to be the perfect place to weather the storm. People were prepared for anything, and their resourcefulness and willingness to help others was truly inspiring.
Bouncing Back from the Rain
Initially, some attendees felt upset about the rain, but the rangers on-site provided valuable information and guidance. They informed us about the worsening weather conditions, encouraging us to plan ahead, ration supplies, and assist others. The Burning Man community understands the importance of preparation for survival in the desert, hence everyone brought extra supplies of everything.
To navigate the muddy conditions caused by the rain and alkaline playa dust, we came up with creative solutions. We instructed everyone to wear zip-bagged socks inside their boots, covered with additional plastic bags. Ensuring the safety of our feet was crucial since walking barefoot was dangerous due to water and exposed cables. As a group, we also worked together to protect cables and electrical equipment from the elements.
A Unique and Supportive Community
What sets Burning Man apart from other events is the incredible support and care people demonstrate towards each other. Unlike the “every man for himself” attitude often found at events like Coachella, Burning Man attendees genuinely asked, “How can I help you? What can I do for you?” It’s a refreshing and unique way of approaching adversity.
Despite the challenging weather, people continued to have fun. Parties were relocated closer to campsites, and strangers went out of their way to deliver food like pizza and sushi. The spirit of celebration remained strong.
An Inspiring Display of Community
Leaving the festival proved to be a challenge due to the massive exodus of 70,000 people. It took us 14 hours to travel just two miles to the festival entrance. Yet, even in these difficult circumstances, the true spirit of Burning Man shone through. People united and prioritized the well-being of others, offering assistance and support throughout the long journey.
This experience showcased the best in humanity, reinforcing my belief that Burning Man is the greatest city on Earth.
