Ryan Nelson, a renowned gallery owner in Minneapolis, recently acquired the painting from a volunteer at the PBS station in Falls Church, Virginia, where The Joy of Painting was broadcasted. The volunteer purchased it for a modest sum at a fundraising auction for the station in November 1983, as reported by CNN. Nelson is now listing it for sale at $9.85 million, which would make it the most expensive and historically significant work by Bob Ross ever sold, according to NPR.
Completed in just 25 minutes using eight colors, the painting showcases a tree-lined stone path leading to a “rain puddle” in the foreground, as described by Ross. On the right, a “pretty little tree” thrives with “happy little leaves,” while Ross leaves his signature, “Ross,” in red on the left. With his previous experience in trading Ross’ works, Nelson is confident that he will secure the asking price for this extraordinary and one-of-a-kind painting. NPR states that this artwork marks the beginning of Ross’s 31-season journey on The Joy of Painting, making him a prominent figure in the art world of the 20th century and a pop culture icon.
The scarcity of Bob Ross’s paintings in the market adds to their value, particularly because the demand for his work has grown due to nostalgia and social media trends, as noted by Nelson. As reported by the New York Times in 2019, “If you want to buy a Bob Ross, you can’t.” Ross claimed to have created over 30,000 paintings, including three versions of each artwork featured on The Joy of Painting. However, the locations of the majority of his paintings remain unknown. Bob Ross Inc. currently holds around 1,165 of his artworks, but they have no intention to sell them. If you’re unable to afford the $10 million price tag, Nelson advises keeping an eye out for other opportunities.
