Mayor Luigi Brugnaro described the crash scene as “apocalyptic” in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, and announced the city’s mourning for the numerous victims. Meanwhile, emergency crews were present at the scene of the accident, where the bus caught fire. Local media reported that the bus fell a few meters before crashing near Mestre’s railway tracks. The state police have initiated an investigation and are providing assistance to the victims.

“The people on the bus found themselves surrounded by flames,” said Mauro Luongo, commander of the Venice firefighters team. “The scene we encountered was horrifying, and it took approximately an hour to extract some of the bodies.”

A total of four individuals sustained serious injuries and were in critical condition following the incident, according to Boraso.

The City of Venice stated on social media that all the injured individuals had been transported to a nearby hospital, and the railway lines had resumed operation. Luca Zaia, the governor of the Veneto region, expressed uncertainty regarding the cause of the accident, stating, “This is a significant tragedy, but it’s difficult to comprehend how it occurred. The bus was new and electric, and the street did not pose any particular problems.”

Premier Giorgia Meloni expressed her deepest sorrow for the crash and extended condolences to the victims and their families via social media.
