Health Minister Stephen Donnelly: It’s Time to Focus on Impact, Not Just Funding

Stephen Donnelly has proven his competency in the first three areas, but when it comes to understanding the experiences of voters, he seems to fall short. This is evident in his recent statements, as his department’s budget struggles to meet demands.

The Health Minister confidently addressed the media, stating: “I have no regrets, and neither does this Government, for the significant investment we’ve made in healthcare over the past three years.”

However, the issue has never been about allocating funds to healthcare. Just last year, a record €24 billion was invested. Yet, despite this, we still face record waiting lists, bed shortages, overcrowded emergency departments, overworked staff, and healthcare professionals leaving the country in large numbers.

The public is left wondering why these problems persist, despite the significant financial investments. It would be unfair to solely blame Mr. Donnelly, but it is equally unfair for him to ignore the fact that money alone does not guarantee improvements. Productive spending and results must be shown.

The Health Minister is correct in calling for an “honest conversation.” However, this conversation should involve discussing significant changes that can lead to better conditions for healthcare staff and improved outcomes for patients.

Being the Health Minister does not automatically entitle one to record funding and emergency payments of €1 billion whenever there is a financial crisis. While exceptional circumstances may exist, it does not mean that reforms and improvements cannot be implemented. These circumstances are no longer exceptional if they occur every year.

Taxpayer spending must be controlled, and conditions should be applied to ensure a return on investment. The decades of mismanagement that led to the current state of healthcare should serve as motivation to address the underlying problems.

Money seems to be disappearing without tangible results, and simply throwing more funds at the issue is futile if the underlying problems are not addressed. Efficiencies, restructuring, and recruitment need to be considered and enforced.

Allocations to all departments should be evaluated based on needs and benefits. We all want a well-funded health service, but this requires responsibility and accountability in decision-making to ensure positive outcomes for patients.
