Sept. 1 (UPI) — During an eventful second-round victory over Christopher O’Connell at the 2023 U.S. Open, tennis star Daniil Medvedev expressed his frustration by hitting a camera and questioning the intelligence of some fans.

Medvedev emerged triumphant with a 6-2, 6-2, 6(6)-7, 6-2 victory in a match that lasted 3 hours and 4 minutes. The No. 3 ranked men’s player served a total of twelve aces and broke O’Connell’s serve eight times.

“Tough match,” reflected Medvedev during his on-court interview broadcasted on ESPN. “I don’t know why, but at one point in the match, my opponent decided to step up his game. From my side, I played consistently throughout.”

After racing to a two-set lead, the Russian player dropped the third set to his Australian opponent. During a break between sets, Medvedev used his hand to push away a camera, displaying his frustration.

Medvedev later engaged with the crowd prior to serving in the fourth set. While bouncing the ball, he directed an angry outburst towards a group of women, asking them to be quiet and questioning their intelligence.

The exchange ended when one woman blew a kiss back to Medvedev. The crowd responded by booing the player, prompting Medvedev to request the chair umpire to quiet the spectators for his serve.

Regaining his focus, Medvedev won the next two points, securing a 3-1 lead in the fourth set. O’Connell fought back, winning three consecutive games and eventually winning the tie break.

Undeterred, Medvedev won his first two service games of the fourth set. He then broke O’Connell in the fourth game and held again in the fifth, establishing a commanding 4-1 advantage. In the end, Medvedev broke O’Connell once more to claim the set 6-2.

Next up, Medvedev will face Sebastian Baez of Argentina in the third round on Saturday in Flushing.
