In a retaliatory move, Russia launched a series of drone and missile attacks on southern Ukraine early Tuesday, responding to the fatal attack on a crucial bridge in Crimea the previous day.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the strikes targeted facilities involved in planning “terror attacks” against their forces using maritime drones, as well as a ship repair plant responsible for manufacturing these drones. It further stated that fuel storage facilities near Odesa and Mykolaiv were also destroyed.
Moscow attributed the explosion on a section of the Kerch Bridge in Crimea, which resulted in the death of a couple and injury to their daughter, to two Ukrainian maritime drones, labeling it a terrorist attack.
Ukraine, however, reported multiple waves of attack drones preceding the launch of six Kalibr cruise missiles towards Odesa. The governor of the Odesa oblast claimed that all six missiles were successfully intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses, but debris from the weapons caused damage to port infrastructure and private homes.
In response to the attack on the Kerch Bridge, Moscow decided to halt its participation in the Black Sea Grain Initiative. This initiative allowed Ukraine to export grain and other food products to African, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries during the ongoing conflict.
However, Russia contends that the termination of their involvement in the deal is unrelated to the bridge attack, as reported by Reuters.
