StandBy Mode: A Game-Changing New Feature

Apple’s highly-anticipated iOS 17 iPhone update is set to launch this fall. Having tested the beta version for several weeks, I can confidently say that the standout feature is StandBy Mode. This innovative function transforms your iPhone into a sleek bedside clock, surpassing the capabilities of a traditional alarm clock. StandBy Mode will be available on all devices receiving the iOS 17 update, which includes the 2018 iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and newer models.

StandBy mode offers a range of functionalities. Apart from checking the time, you can easily access upcoming calendar events, check the weather for the day, and view notifications with a simple swipe. Alternatively, for those who prefer a more traditional approach, StandBy Mode can display various clock faces, adding a touch of elegance to your bedside table.

In addition, StandBy Mode functions seamlessly on your desk. Users can customize the display to showcase a rotating collection of photos from their image library, reminiscent of smart home hub devices offered by Amazon or Google. Moreover, whether your phone is positioned on your bedside table or desk, you can conveniently instruct Siri to provide information, such as the estimated time to reach your workplace or control other smart devices.

Rest assured, StandBy mode is designed with your sleep in mind. The screen automatically dims or turns off when you switch off the lights, preventing any disturbances. Furthermore, Apple has incorporated a special night mode, inspired by the Apple Watch Ultra, which changes the color of the clock, calendar, and text to a soothing red hue, reducing eye strain.

Furthermore, you have the option to enable notifications that provide detailed information from your apps. For example, you can receive notifications regarding the delivery status of your packages, ensuring you never miss an update. While StandBy mode is optimized for the iPhone 14 Pro with its always-on display, other models can quickly reactivate the screen with a simple tap.

• If you want to keep the screen on at all times, choose “Always On” under Display. This feature is available on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
