Could Canada be the next to introduce kid-free zones on flights, following the lead of a European airline? – National

Passengers flying with Corendon Airlines will soon be able to access a child-free section of select flights. Beginning on November 3, the Turkish-Dutch leisure airline will launch an “Only Adult” zone for passengers aged 16 and older on its Amsterdam to Curaçao routes. This section is designed for adults without children and for business travelers seeking a quiet environment. The zone will be separated from other travelers with walls and curtains and will consist of 102 seats. Each seat will cost 45 euros per trip, with an option for extra legroom at 100 euros. While Corendon believes this child-free zone will provide peace of mind for parents, experts are skeptical about the operational challenges of maintaining a secure cabin. McGill University’s John Gradek suggests that the complexity may be underestimated and questions the acceptance of the high prices. While Corendon is the first European airline to offer child-free seating, other budget carriers globally have already implemented similar variations. However, aviation experts doubt the likelihood of Canadian airlines adopting these kid-free zones due to operational complexity, potential revenue loss from blocking off seats, and the need to accommodate full fare demand.

Robert Kokonis, president and managing director of aviation consulting firm Air Travel Inc., agrees that Corendon’s child-free zone is more of a marketing ploy and does not see the concept catching on in Canada. He questions where the line would be drawn in terms of noise and behavior and emphasizes that children on public vessels, including airlines, are a fact of life. He believes everyone has the right to travel, making the adoption of child-free zones unlikely.
