Company to Compensate for Pollution of US Waters by Ship

A foreign shipping company, Zeaborn Ship Management, has been fined $2 million by US officials for illegally dumping oily bilge water off the coast of California. This water is described as a mixture of filthy water, lubricants, grease, cleaning fluids, and other contaminants. The company discharged over 7,500 gallons of water without processing it through pollution prevention equipment as required. The chief engineer and captain of the ship, Star Maia, admitted to falsely recording the discharges as properly treated.

This illegal practice of dumping oily bilge water is known as a “cost-saving practice.” While it may result in a deficiency note or detention during an overseas inspection, in the United States, it is considered a felony offense due to the falsification of oil record books. The captain and chief engineer of the ship have pleaded guilty to one felony violation and will be sentenced on December 1.

Additionally, the men admitted to burning garbage, including paper, plastics, and oily rags, on the ship’s deck three or four times during the same period. The barrels containing the burned garbage were then thrown into the ocean without any record in the vessel’s garbage book. The US Coast Guard’s Sector San Diego praised the prosecution, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding the maritime environment.
