Rory McIlroy Turns Attention to Fourth FedEx Cup After Diminishing Emotional Investment in LIV Battle

Rory McIlroy played a significant role in supporting the PGA Tour during its battle against LIV Golf. He dedicated himself to getting changes approved in response to the threat posed by the Saudi-funded breakaway. However, the PGA Tour surprised many in June with its plans to strike a deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which supports LIV.

Now, with Tiger Woods joining the PGA Tour’s policy board, McIlroy has been able to take a step back. During his pre-event press conference in Atlanta, he expressed how his focus has shifted more towards his own game and spending quality time with his family.

Reflecting on the past year, McIlroy mentioned his involvement in discussions about designated events and creating a more competitive landscape in professional golf. While he remains a member of the board and votes on important matters, he admits to being less emotionally engaged in matters of governance and investment.

As the only three-time winner of the FedEx Cup, McIlroy is eager to defend his title. Last year, he staged an impressive comeback, overturning a six-shot deficit in the final round of the Tour Championship. This year, he starts with a score of seven under par, putting him in a good position to compete for the championship.

The scoring system used in the Tour Championship has received mixed reviews. While McIlroy supports it, recognizing its benefits in creating a more exciting competition, Scottie Scheffler, the player with the most FedEx Cup points from the regular season, questions its ability to determine the best golfer of the year.

Scheffler recalls his experience of losing a six-shot lead in last year’s final round, admitting he had a rough start but managed to regain his composure and perform well. He recognizes the mental aspect of the game and the importance of staying focused.
