College professors who have caught students cheating using OpenAI’s artificial intelligence-powered bot ChatGPT are opting to return to paper exams this coming fall. Timothy Main, a writing professor at Canada’s Conestoga College, expressed his concerns on social media, stating that he caught numerous students plagiarizing using ChatGPT. Main revealed that some students even turned in assignments that were copied verbatim without reading the content they had stolen. To address this issue, Main and his colleagues are revamping the college’s freshman writing course, focusing on personalized assignments that encourage students to write about their own experiences and perspectives. They will also implement strict rules prohibiting the use of artificial intelligence in assignments and syllabi. College professors are struggling to find ways to prevent students from utilizing ChatGPT to cheat.
Various professors are considering returning to paper-based tests to combat cheating through the use of ChatGPT. Bonnie MacKellar, a computer science professor at St. John’s University, points out that the discipline already faced a significant plagiarism problem with students copying computer code from friends or the internet. MacKellar worries that students who take shortcuts using AI are depriving themselves of the skills needed for higher-level classes. She believes the solution is to revert back to traditional blue book exams. In her intro courses, MacKellar plans to require students to handwrite their code, with the paper exams carrying a greater weight in the final grade.
While some students, like Ronan Takizawa, a sophomore at Colorado College who majors in computer science, believe paper exams are a step backward, they acknowledge that it would compel students to truly understand and learn the subject matter. Takizawa also notes that many students are unsure of the boundaries when it comes to using AI, sometimes confusing its use with cheating. For example, using ChatGPT to summarize reading assignments may seem no different from utilizing YouTube or other websites that students have long relied on. However, he acknowledges that most students lack the discipline to resist using ChatGPT altogether.
