Redondo Beach police will be soliciting the assistance of the public on Monday in their investigation into the death of a woman whose remains were discovered at a construction site in 2001. This woman had been listed as a Jane Doe until her identity was recently determined through familial DNA.
The woman’s remains were originally found on August 29, 2001, at a construction site on Wollacott Street in the 1600 block. Unfortunately, investigators were unable to identify her at the time.
For many years, her death remained a perplexing mystery. However, in January 2019, the Redondo Beach Police Department Cold Case Investigations Unit decided to reopen the case. They partnered with the DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit organization specializing in identifying missing persons through DNA evidence collected at crime scenes.
Based on the initial work conducted by the DNA Doe Project, a DNA comparison test was conducted in March of this year. This test determined that two women were related to the deceased individual, leading to the tentative identification of Catherine Parker-Johnson. Later in the same month, a familial DNA sample collected in Tennessee was sent to the California Department of Justice. In April, state investigators confirmed that the remains did indeed belong to Parker-Johnson, although her exact age was not immediately available.
The Redondo Beach police reported that Parker-Johnson had never been reported missing. The last known contact her family had with her was in May of 1981, and the last time anyone else had contact with her was on August 31, 1981, in Lennox.
Although no details have been released regarding the cause of death, the police consider this case an active homicide investigation.
