Green New Dealers target NYC pizza due to coal-fired ovens

New York’s enthusiastic environmentalists have now turned their attention to one of Gotham’s beloved treasures: pizza.

The city’s Department of Environmental Protection has proposed strict new regulations that could potentially force pizzerias that use wood- and coal-fired ovens, the traditional way of making pizza, to reduce emissions by up to 75%. Achieving this target would require the installation of expensive filtration systems on older ovens, which would primarily affect older, iconic establishments like Lombardi’s in Little Italy and Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn.

If a pizzeria cannot afford the filtration system or if the layout of the oven/kitchen does not allow for its installation, the owners would have to seek exemption from the DEP.

What’s worse, some argue that the filtration systems could alter the taste of the pizza by interfering with the oven’s temperature and atmospheric conditions.

As one disgruntled customer expressed to The Post, “I support responsible environmental practices, but perhaps Al Gore should consider reducing his private jet usage instead.”
