China hit by Typhoon Doksuri following devastating impact on Philippines, leaving dozens dead – National news

Typhoon Doksuri made its way into southern China on Friday, wreaking havoc with heavy rainfall and strong winds. The storm damaged power lines, caused fires, uprooted trees, and even tore off part of a stadium roof. This is the most powerful typhoon to hit China this year and the second-strongest to hit Fujian province since Typhoon Meranti in 2016. As a result, schools, businesses, and offshore oil and gas fields were closed, and workers were evacuated. Over 724,600 people were affected, with 124,400 people moved to safety, and a total economic loss of 52.27 million yuan ($7.30 million) reported.

In the city of Quanzhou, 39 people suffered minor injuries, and more than 500,000 households lost power. The wind was so strong that the retractable roof of a stadium in downtown Quanzhou was ripped apart, sending debris flying. The storm’s wind speed was downgraded to a severe tropical storm, but it still posed a threat of torrential rain to inland provinces like Anhui, known for its agricultural productions such as corn, rice, soybean, and cotton. The rain bands of the typhoon are expected to reach as far north as Beijing.

Thankfully, there have been no immediate reports of fatalities. However, in 2016, Typhoon Meranti caused 11 deaths when it made landfall near Xiamen, south of Quanzhou. This incident has made residents more cautious and fearful of the current typhoon. Videos shared on social media showed power lines sparking and bursting into flames, trees uprooted, and roads blocked with debris. People were seen trying to protect their apartments from flooding caused by heavy rain. Some areas in Jinjiang and Quanzhou experienced power and water cuts.

Prior to its arrival in China, Typhoon Doksuri had already caused death and destruction as it passed through the Philippines and southern Taiwan. In the Philippines, a ferry sank near Manila, resulting in at least 26 deaths. In Taiwan, the storm knocked down trees and cut power to hundreds of thousands of homes. Businesses remained closed for a second day and extreme weather warnings were issued, including for landslides and floods.

Overall, this typhoon has had a significant impact on the affected regions, causing damage to infrastructure and disrupting the lives of many. It serves as a reminder of the destructive power of natural disasters.
