More Games Being Added to the Meta Horizon Worlds Metaverse Update

The Meta Quest 3 VR headset, developed by Meta, is undergoing significant changes to its Horizon Worlds virtual reality app. The aim is to incorporate more video games into the social platform, which has struggled to gain a large audience. Horizon Worlds is a free virtual reality social network where users can create avatars and interact with others.

To enhance the appeal of Horizon Worlds, Meta has established an in-house studio called Ouro Interactive. This studio’s primary focus is to develop first-party virtual reality games. According to Vishal Shah, Meta’s Vice President of Metaverse, the studio’s inaugural VR game, Super Rumble, was launched on Friday. The game reportedly boasts superior graphics and fidelity compared to other VR games within Horizon Worlds. Furthermore, Super Rumble will be among the first VR games that Meta intends to test when it releases a mobile version of Horizon Worlds.

Shah referred to these updates as “the next generation of Horizon Worlds,” emphasizing that it goes beyond simply introducing a new world. As Meta continues to develop the new Horizon Worlds, users can anticipate the release of more video games. Meta has also revamped the VR platform’s infrastructure to support higher-quality and more complex games, as well as provide additional tools for third-party developers.

Shah explained that Meta aims to offer a range of compelling content from day one to attract consumers to Horizon. The company plans to seed the ecosystem by creating content in-house and collaborating with external studios. Furthermore, when Meta launches a mobile version of Horizon Worlds, Shah envisions the app functioning as a bridge between smartphones and Meta’s Quest VR headsets.

The revamping of Horizon Worlds coincides with Meta’s latest earnings report. The Reality Labs units of the company recorded a $3.7 billion operating loss while generating $276 million in revenue. Since the beginning of 2022, the Reality Labs unit has incurred a loss of over $21 billion, underscoring the substantial investment necessary to develop compelling metaverse technologies such as VR and augmented reality.

Meta’s Horizon Worlds serves as the company’s equivalent of Roblox, a digital playground designed to attract users who want to play games and interact with others in a 3D social network. However, the service has yet to achieve mainstream success, reportedly attracting less than 200,000 monthly active users. This highlights the current lack of enthusiasm for VR among the general public.
