Chelsea close to completing record-breaking £115m deal for Brighton star Moises Caicedo, surpassing Liverpool’s previous offer

Chelsea is on the verge of securing the services of Moises Caicedo from Brighton in a groundbreaking deal worth £115 million, potentially setting a new British record. After surpassing Liverpool’s £111 million bid, Chelsea has engaged in final negotiations to finalize the agreement.

Caicedo expressed his desire to join Chelsea, leading the London club to reopen negotiations with Brighton. Brighton has remained steadfast in their stance that only a British record fee would be acceptable for the 21-year-old Ecuadorian international. The current record stands at £106.8 million, paid by Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez in January.

The conclusion of this deal would mark the end of a highly public pursuit by Chelsea, who had made multiple offers, with their highest offer reaching £80 million. Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is on the cusp of securing his primary target after months of uncertainty, leaving Liverpool to miss out on the talented Ecuadorian.

Once all the final terms are settled, Caicedo will sign an unprecedented eight-year contract. This deal represents a remarkable piece of business for Brighton, who initially acquired Caicedo for a mere £4.5 million from Independiente del Valle in 2021.

In addition to the Caicedo deal, Chelsea is actively pursuing Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia. With Liverpool’s three unsuccessful bids, Chelsea has now offered around £55 million for Lavia’s services. The transfer talks have affected Lavia’s frame of mind, resulting in him being omitted from Southampton’s lineup against Norwich on Saturday. Southampton manager Russell Martin believes a resolution is drawing closer.

All in all, Chelsea’s transfer activities continue to make headlines, as they aim to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
