Canada unexpectedly calls for a halt in trade treaty negotiations with India – National

India’s ambassador to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, revealed that Ottawa has requested a pause in trade negotiations just before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to New Delhi. Verma stated that the Canadian side made an “honest request” for a pause, and India has accepted it. A Canadian government official, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned that the pause is to assess the current situation. The negotiations between the two countries have been ongoing since March 2022, focusing on specific industries rather than the entire economy. Verma emphasized the intensity of the negotiations, with 10 rounds in 13 months. He suggested that Ottawa may need more time to consult with stakeholders as they approach the end of the negotiations. In May, Minister of Trade Mary Ng expressed optimism about signing a deal soon. However, the news of a pause surprised Goldy Hyder, president of the Business Council of Canada, who has been advocating for a trade deal for years. He highlighted India’s protectionist policies and the potential interference from Sikh communities in Canada who support Khalistan, which could hinder the negotiations. Despite the pause, both sides are still committed to reaching a beneficial agreement, as trade between India and Canada continues to grow.
